What funding is available for windows and doors?
The main funding scheme for windows, external doors, gates and curtain walls is the Bundesförderung für effiziente Gebäude – Einzelmaßnahmen (BEG EM), a German federal programme administered by BAFA (Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control).
Funding covers, among others:
- Replacement, renewal or first-time installation of windows
- Replacement, renewal or first-time installation of external doors and gates
- Renewal or refurbishment of curtain walls
- Insulation of the building envelope (external walls, roofs, ceilings, floors)
- Summer thermal protection using external solar shading
The scheme applies to existing buildings: the building permit must have been issued at least five years before the application.
Responsibilities are split: BAFA handles the building envelope and other efficiency measures, while KfW handles heating.
How much funding can you receive?
The grant is a percentage of eligible costs – not a fixed amount. The actual level depends on the scope of works and the type of building.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum eligible investment | €300 gross |
| Base funding rate | 15% of eligible costs |
| iSFP bonus (with an individual renovation roadmap) | +5% |
| Cap on eligible costs – 1st dwelling unit | €30,000 |
| Cap – 2nd to 6th dwelling unit | €15,000 each |
| Cap – from the 7th dwelling unit | €8,000 each |
| Increased cap with iSFP – 1st dwelling unit | €60,000 |
On the iSFP bonus: the 5% bonus only applies from a minimum eligible investment of €30,000 for single-unit buildings. With more dwelling units this threshold rises accordingly. The bonus applies only to the amount exceeding that threshold.
In practice, for a retrofit covering windows and doors at the upper end of the range, the monetary caps are usually the binding limit rather than the percentage itself. We assess this individually for your property.
Conditions and technical requirements
Funding is tied to minimum technical requirements set out in the funding guidelines. These concern, among other things, the thermal transmittance (U-value) of the installed components. We verify the specific limit values for your property against the currently applicable guidelines – we deliberately avoid blanket promises here.
Binding conditions:
- An Energy Efficiency Expert (Energieeffizienz-Experte, EEE) must be involved for building envelope measures. They are responsible for technical planning and verification.
- The application must be submitted before work begins. Anything installed or commissioned beforehand is generally not eligible.
- The works must lead to an improvement in the building’s energy performance.
A suitable expert can be found on the platform provided by dena: energie-effizienz-experten.de.
The route to funding – step by step
- Engage an Energy Efficiency Expert (EEE) – they handle the energy assessment and planning.
- Technical Project Description (TPB) – the expert prepares the TPB and provides you with the TPB ID.
- Submit the application – online via the BAFA portal, quoting the TPB ID. This must happen before work begins.
- Carry out the installation – in line with the described and approved scope.
- Technical Project Verification (TPN) – on completion the expert confirms the works meet the requirements. You receive the TPN ID, valid for two months.
- Submit proof of use (Verwendungsnachweis) – via the online form in the BAFA portal; payment follows.
Note: since 21 July 2026, applications under the new funding conditions require newly generated TPB IDs.
Energy advice and iSFP – up to €850 extra
The Bundesförderung der Energieberatung für Wohngebäude (EBW) subsidises the advice itself – and at the same time establishes the basis for the iSFP bonus under BEG:
| Case | Funding |
|---|---|
| Single- and two-family houses | 50% of the fee, max. €650 |
| Residential buildings with three or more units | 50%, max. €850 |
| Homeowners’ association (WEG) | +€250 one-off, when results are presented at the owners’ meeting |
Important: an individual renovation roadmap (iSFP) funded under EBW is a precondition for the iSFP bonus to be recognised under BEG. EBW applications currently take about two weeks to process.
Non-residential buildings and business clients
Suitable routes also exist for non-residential buildings and companies:
- BEG EM – non-residential buildings: efficiency measures on the building envelope, also via BAFA.
- Energy advice for non-residential buildings, plants and systems (EBN): subsidised advice for commercial and municipal properties.
- Bundesförderung für Energie- und Ressourceneffizienz in der Wirtschaft (EEW): grant and loan for efficiency measures within the company itself – in six modules, including cross-cutting technologies (module 1), process heat from renewables (module 2), control and monitoring technology plus energy management software (module 3), optimisation of plants and processes (module 4), transformation plans (module 5) and electrification of small companies (module 6).
- Heating replacement: funded via KfW, not BAFA. For retrofits that include a new heating system we review both routes in parallel.
What GLAZE takes care of
- Assessing your project and determining which programme applies
- Preparing a cost estimate containing the data the Energy Efficiency Expert needs
- Manufacturing and installation in line with the approved scope
- Providing the documentation for proof of use: invoices, contractor declarations, technical product data and verifications
- Support in communicating with your Energy Efficiency Expert
What we are not: we are not an energy consultancy or an Energy Efficiency Expert. The Technical Project Description (TPB), Technical Project Verification (TPN) and the renovation roadmap are prepared by the expert you appoint. We compile the documentation for the components we supply.
